What happens when you tie a band around your wrist tightly, why do the veins in your hand swell up?
It is a fairly simply thing, it is because you have compressed your veins, so they cannot pump blood so the blood cannot move and thus, the veins become prominent.
But there is a little more to it, the actual reason is that the pressure in the arteries is higher than the pressure in the veins. The arteries bring blood to a region and the veins take it away, so after having tied a rubber around say your wrist if you have blocked the outflow but not completely the inflow, this is what makes your veins prominent. So, after tying a band around a place the veins in the region that are distal to the heart swell up.
Why should the pressure in the veins be lower?
The lower pressure in the veins allows for it suck up blood plasma from a tissue while a higher pressure in the arteries allows it to supply blood plasma to a region.
A few other interesting things...
The plasma proteins are interesting because the proteins are heavy molecules, so they generally don't leave the blood vessels ie. The veins and the arteries.
The osmotic pressure of the plasma proteins is responsible for decreasing the amount of water that leave the arterial side and also for increasing the amount of water that the veins suck in, a decrease in the level of plasma proteins can cause generalised body swelling, Anasarca. How can the level of plasma proteins decrease? A decrease in the production so to say to Liver Failure as Plasma proteins are mostly produced in the Liver and also damage to kidneys which leads to the excretion of proteins in the Urine. Malnutrition can also cause generalised body swelling as it makes it difficult for the body to produce plasma proteins.
