Unitary meathod

If 4 pencils cost 20 pennies.
How much would 8 pencils cost?

The answer can be found by doubling 20, because 8 pencils would cost double the amount it would cost to buy 4 pencils.

Similarly it would also be easy if we were to find the cost of 2 pencils, 12 pencils, 16 pencils, 20 pencils and so on.

But it would be a little difficult to find the cost of 3 pencils if all we knew was the cost of 4 pencils.

With 3 it is a little difficult because unlike 8, 12 or 16 it is not a mutltiple of 4.

But what if we had a number of whom all numbers were a multiple, yes we have it and it is 1.

So Unitary meathod is a series of three steps in which.

- In the first statement, we write the given information.

- In the second or intermediate stage we find the cost of 1 commodity.

- And in the third step we find the answer.

Eg 1 -

The cost of 4 pencils is 20 pennies.
The cost of 1 pencil is 20÷4= 5 pennies
Thus the cost of 3 pencils is 5 × 3 = 15

Eg -

10 men build a wall in 30 days

1 men will build the same wall in 30×10= 300 days

So 3 men will build the wall in 300÷3= 100 days.

The word Unitary - it basically means one. To understand it' s etymology - look at these words.

Unique - one of a kind
Unicorn - having one horn (corn is horn)
United - as in United Nations - One world
Un - Un is one in Spanish Un, dos, tres(Numero Uno)

The word unitary means one as we are basically solving the problems by finding the value correspondin to one object/person.

Percentage

If you have understood the concept of Unitary meathod, this should be easier for you.

The word percent is basically per cent - cent means hundred (century - hundred years).

Which means out of every hundred.

To find percent we write the statement, calculate the relation of 1 object/person then multiply it by 100.

Eg-

Out of 9 people 3 people prefer to use a bucycle over walking.

Then out of 1 person 3/9 or 1/3 prefer to use a bicycle over walking. (Divide both sides by 9)

Then out of 100 people 100 × 1/3 prefer to use a bicycle over walking. Which 33% which is to say that 33 people out of 100 prefer to use a cycle over walking.
